CRITIQUE

I wish to thank the officers and committee of the club for inviting me to judge, and for the beautiful gifts that I will treasure forever. Thanks also to Toni, my super-efficient ring steward and scribe. Also to the exhibitors for their beautifully presented dogs and good grace. Finally thanks to the dogs themselves, who gave their all in quite hot conditions.

I was so excited to come and judge in Australia, this was my first appointment since 2003 in WA. I do visit regularly as I co-own two males in Tasmania, and I am a member of the TCA. I am also very passionate about the breed, and I have visited, judged or exhibited at collie shows all over the world.

The Collies in Australia are unique in that they are rarely judged by breed specialists, so they must be very sound in order to do well at the majority of shows – something that is sadly not applicable in Europe. Also, the Australian breeders have had access to many of the European and American lines, either through imports of dogs or semen. Plus you can also mate Roughs to Smooths, something that we cannot do in most of Europe. These advantages have been used well, and what I saw today reflected that melting pot. I did not see really extreme modern or American types, as I would in Europe, but a successful blend. My main winners could win anywhere in the Collie world. Congratulations!

Beautiful 10 year old blue.  Stunning colour.  Beautifully put together.  However, she’s much too fat and is favoring her shoulder today.  Head is balanced but a little high over the eyes.  Beautiful ears used all the time. She is loving her day out. I wish I could have judged her 5 years ago!
